Known popularly as "Hachisuka Koroku," Hachisuka Masakatsu (1526-1586) was the founder of the Hachisuka clan that ruled the Tokushima Domain until the feudal system was abolished in 1871.
Masakatsu was the earliest and longest-serving general under Toyotomi Hideyoshi, one of the three Great Unifiers from the period alongside Oda Nobunaga and Tokuagawa Ieyasu. He used his great resourcefulness and wit to support Hideyoshi to the utmost of his ability, helping Hideyoshi become the ruler of Japan.
However, what has passed down and become commonly known about him is that he was a ruthless warrior and bandit. Taking advantage of this year being the 500th anniversary of Masakatsu's birth, we would like to use this special exhibit to clear up the incomplete picture of him. We have gathered all sorts of documents in hope you can come away with a more complete image of Hachisuka Masakatsu.

About the Exhibit
Opening Ceremony
Not only does this special exhibit celeberate the 500th anniversary Hachisuka Masakatsu's birth, but since the Tokushima Castle Museum opened in 1992, this will be our 200th temporary exhibition. To celebrate this milestone, we will be holding an opening ceremony at the museum.
Date: 10/10/2026 (Sun.) from 9:00 AM (Tea will be served from 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM)
Free tea service will be offered by the Tokushima Prefecture Branch of the Omontesenke Domonkai to the first 50 visitors who a purchase a ticket and enter the museum.

NHK Tokushima × Taiga Drama "Toyotomi Brothers!" Find Hachisuka Masakatsu's secret treasure! Mystery Walk Rally
Take part in a mystery-solving event where you walk aroud the castle and solve a mystery invovling Hachisuka Masakatsu and Tokushima Castle.
Date & Time: Until 11/23/2026 (Mon., Holiday)
Caution: The event is held by the NHK Tokushima Broadcasting Station and will begin on the start date and time of the exhibition

How to Enter: Go to either the NHK Tokushima Broadcasting Station or the Tokushima Castle and get a mystery kit

Learn Japanese Hisory Through Kodan
Kodan is a traditional form of Japanese storytelling, not unlike the dramaticized storytelling of epics found all over the world. A Shinuchi Kodan artist, Kyokudo Nanryu will perform a Kodan. Shigeki Sudo, a professor at Shikoku University will explain the Kodan and hold an open dialog.
