Pediatric COVID-19 Vaccine (Ages 5-11)

The bivalent Omicron-adapted (BA.4-5) Pfizer vaccine for children ages 5-11 was designated for subsequent vaccinations and became available for use on and after March 8, 2023. 　
(Use of the Omicron-adapted vaccine for booster shots began in Tokushima Prefecture on March 25, 2023.)
The schedule and number of times one can recieve the booster shot may vary depending on certain factors, such as the presence of an underlying illness.

Children ages 5-11 who have received at least the first two doses of the vaccine are eligible to receive the bivalent Omicron-adapted vaccine.

Vaccines will be administered once 3 or more months have passed since the child's previous vaccination.

(Note):
The pediatric vaccine contains 1/3 of the amount of active ingredients compared to the Pfizer vaccine for ages 12 and older.

The first two doses will be available until March 31, 2024.

The 1st dose of the vaccine is available to children aged 5-11 (from the day before their 5th birthday, up to two days before their 12th birthday).

In general, if your child received the pediatric Pfizer vaccine for their 1st dose vaccination while under the age of 12, they will be given the pediatric vaccine for their 2nd dose as well, even if they are over the age of 12 by the time they receive the 2nd dose.

(Note:)
Children who are 12 years or older at the time of their 1st dose vaccination will be given either the original Pfizer vaccine or the Takeda Novavax vaccine.

Number of Doses: 2 doses
Vaccination Interval: Usually 3 weeks

(In the case that more than 3 weeks pass after you receive the 1st dose, you do not need to be re-vaccinated with the 1st dose. We recommend that you receive the 2nd dose as soon as possible.)

The original strain (monovalent) Pfizer vaccine (for ages 5-11)

Eligibility for the booster shot varies depending on the vaccination period.
Booster shots (3rd dose vaccinations) using the original strain (monovalent) vaccine have been discontinued as of March 31, 2023.

1st & 2nd Doses: Vouchers are no longer being sent out as of November 2022.
Booster Shot: Vouchers will be sent 3 months after the date of the previous dose.

1. Vaccination Voucher (with medical screening questionnaire)
   Please bring your voucher to your appointment, without detaching the vaccination certificate from the screening questionnaire.
2. ID of the person receiving the vaccine
   My Number Card, health insurance card, residence card, etc.
3. Maternal & Child Health Handbook

Children under 16 years of age cannot be vaccinated without the consent of a parent or legal guardian. The parent or guardian must accompany the child to their appointment and sign their medical screening questionnaire.
The vaccine will not be administered without the signature of a parent or legal guardian.

Those who have a certificate of residence outside of Tokushima City, but wish to have their child vaccinated by their general practitioner in Tokushima City are able to do so without submitting a notification.
If you wish to receive the vaccine in Tokushima City from a healthcare provider that is not your general practitioner, or if you hold a certificate of residence in a city outside of Tokushima Prefecture, you must submit a "Notification for COVID-19 Vaccination Outside Your Registered Domicile"（外部サイト）（外部サイト）.

• Please allow at least 13 days before or after receiving your COVID-19 vaccine if you will be receiving any other immunizatons apart from the flu shot.
• Although we encourage everyone to receive the COVID-19 vaccine, it is not mandatory. Individuals receiving the COVID-19 vaccine must do so of their own volition upon understanding both the preventative benefits and possible side effects of the vaccine. Individuals should not be forced to receive the vaccine, nor should they be discriminated against for being unvaccinated.
