Indigo Dyeing

Tokushima prospered from the feudal era to the Meiji Era as a center of production of Tadeai, a type of indigo dye. In the past you could find many Aigura (indigo warehouses) lined up along the Shinmachi River in the center of Tokushima City, and the influence of these warehouses can be found today in names of locations (etc.) around the city, such as Aibahama (藍場浜). The prosperity from these days can also be found in places and items such as the huge lanterns of the Kotohira Shrine, which were donated by indigo merchants in the city.
Even in the present, the influence of the indigo dye can be found in the indigo color that can be found representing Tokushima City.
It is said that the charm of indigo dyeing is the moment that a dyed items turns blue after being dyed and soaked in water.
