Leiria City – Portuguese Republic

Tokushima City’s sister city relationship with Leiria City was formed in 1969.

Leiria City is located about 150km north-west of Portugal’s capital city, Lisbon. The city has a population of about 120,000 people and is located on the bank of the Lis River, which flows into the Atlantic Ocean. The beautiful, medieval Leiria Castle stands on a hill overlooking the surrounding city, which is full of white-walled, brick roof houses and streets of cobblestone, which make for a charming cityscape with a historical touch.

After receiving a proposal from Leiria City by the Portuguese Ambassador to Japan, a certificating document was delivered on September 15, 1969, and Leiria City was officially established as one of Tokushima City’s sister cities on October 15 of the same year.
